The Ultimate At-Home Pawdicure Guide

Keeping your dog’s paws in top shape is essential for their comfort, mobility, and overall health. Regular paw care helps prevent cracked pads, overgrown nails, and infections, ensuring your pup stays happy and active. While professional grooming is always a great option, a little at-home TLC goes a long way! Here’s your step-by-step guide to giving your furry friend the ultimate pawdicure at home.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the right supplies:

✔ Dog-friendly nail clippers or a grinder
✔ A soft-bristle brush or damp cloth
✔ Hooper Ruff Paw balm
✔ Styptic powder (just in case of any nail nicks)
✔ A non-slip mat to keep your pup steady

Step 2: Inspect the Paws

Gently examine your dog’s paws for dirt, debris, cuts, or irritation. Check between the toes for any lodged objects, like small rocks or grass seeds. If you notice redness or swelling, consult your vet before proceeding.

Step 3: Trim the Nails

Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and even impact your dog’s posture. Using dog-specific nail clippers or a grinder, trim small amounts at a time to avoid cutting the quick (the sensitive part inside the nail). If your dog has dark nails, trim conservatively to prevent accidental bleeding.

Tip: If your dog is nervous, introduce the clippers or grinder gradually. Give treats and praise to make it a positive experience!

Step 4: Smooth and File

If using a grinder, gently round off any sharp edges. If you used clippers, a nail file can help smooth out rough ends and prevent snagging on carpets or bedding.

Step 5: Moisturise the Pads

Dry or cracked paw pads can be uncomfortable, especially in extreme weather. Apply a small amount of Hooper Ruff paw balm or coconut oil to keep them hydrated and protected.

Tip: Avoid using human lotions, as some ingredients can be harmful to dogs.

Step 6: Clean Between the Toes

Dirt and bacteria can build up between your dog’s toes, leading to irritation. Wipe the area with a damp cloth or use pet wipes to keep them clean and fresh.

Step 7: Reward and Relax

After the pawdicure, reward your dog with treats and playtime. This reinforces a positive experience, making future paw care much easier!
